Reflections on Euromnis: Caroline Mulroney
EurOmnis is an annual conference, run by Developers for Developers. And Omnis, as a rapid development platform and database, has been around since the early 1980's, since before many businesses had computers, let alone knew what the internet was. It has stood the test of time and adapted well in the changing environment in its technological world.
The longevity of the product means in turn, the longevity of its users and that the EurOmnis attendees had the majority aged over 50. This year, some of our 80+ ‘Originals’ made the trip. (Well done guys!)
We haven’t been able to go since 2017, so it was awesome to be at EurOmnis again, to have Paul as one of the Speakers, and to be able to take 2 of our team – John & Matthew. Given the tyranny of distance from Perth to the Netherlands, it was a big undertaking though a worthwhile investment in our opinion. On settling in, John & Matthew surveyed the room; they were not the only under 30’s but there was a degree of dismay at the sea of grey, thinning hair surrounding them, until I pointed out – “You see each of those guys there, they are the business owners and they represent development houses of 5, 10, 50 to 100+ developers. The hotel and their budgets aren’t big enough to bring them all. You are only seeing the tip of the worldwide Omnis Community”.
The nature of EurOmnis, for developers by developers, is reflective of why we call it the ‘Omnis Community’ in that anyone can reach out for help and someone in the community will respond. The conference was a saturated version of what happens every day. Within the sessions, at meals and the chit-chat in between, problems were shared and solved.
Personally speaking, I was a little disappointed that more of the ladies didn’t attend (there are more out there!). I am used of being surrounded by only blokes so that didn’t hold me back. There was so much knowledge to be shared, we had the advantage of having the four of us to cover, I think, all of the sessions on offer. This and the in-person networking with fellow developers and the Omnis Engineering team will have a lasting impact on our software solutions. I know that every session I attended had something that we can use.
A big shout-out of thanks to the EurOmnis Committee for a great year.
